Hello! My name is Alexis Tardif. What you are about to read is my notes and thoughts from my first major voyage.
In 2004 I undertook a 3000 kilometre long journey on foot from Brest, France to Baku in Azerbaijan. On the way I crossed Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Herzegovina, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgian.
During my trip I walked in many different conditions. I walked in cold stormy weather and experienced deserts of sand or stone. I walked with men who wished to leave their country and with others coming back from abroad. I walked through nights filled with the fear of becoming the victim of bombs and I walked among people uplifted in the spirit of love and marriage.
While travelling I met many good people and I learned a lot from that. One of the most significant things I learned was that I am a child of this earth and that everyday I choose my fate.
A part of each country I visited will for as long as I live stay in my heart. It does not take much. Something as simple as the beauty of a mountain or the silence of the sea is enough to change you when you walk alone. There mere hope of to meeting a friendly person was for me enough to push on when things got rough. |
