Hello! My name is Alexis Tardif. What you are about to read is my notes and thoughts from my first major voyage.

In 2004 I undertook a 3000 kilometre long journey on foot from Brest, France to Baku in Azerbaijan. On the way I crossed Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Herzegovina, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgian.

During my trip I walked in many different conditions. I walked in cold stormy weather and experienced deserts of sand or stone. I walked with men who wished to leave their country and with others coming back from abroad. I walked through nights filled with the fear of becoming the victim of bombs and I walked among people uplifted in the spirit of love and marriage.

While travelling I met many good people and I learned a lot from that. One of the most significant things I learned was that I am a child of this earth and that everyday I choose my fate.

A part of each country I visited will for as long as I live stay in my heart. It does not take much. Something as simple as the beauty of a mountain or the silence of the sea is enough to change you when you walk alone. There mere hope of to meeting a friendly person was for me enough to push on when things got rough.

Notebook - Manners of the East

November 25th, I left Brest and began my walk through the Alps. Few days later, I arrived in Italia over Viso Mount and I went down towards Come lake. Following the mountains till the beginning of the Balkans, Slovenia. After one month of trip, I entered in the Ex-Yugoslavia countries. I could feel the rage in people I met on my way: the Croatians, the Herzegovinas, the Serbians, the Montenegrins, the Kosovos and the Macedonians. Their stories give us good reasons to try and reach Peace.

I walk down the Balkans with the Bulgarians. They give me accommodation and food. I kept walking towards new days till the Black sea stopped me. The sea reminds me of the ocean in Brittany and I realise that a longer journey begins : Turkey. Each region is different because of its influences and history. My spirit gets lost through this cold winter. I was lucky then to meet the Georgians, with their rare language and their strong personality. Caucasus is huge, as huge as the people are different. The mountains disappear and the Caspian Sea stops me. I discovered Azerbaijan, and thousands of faces with the colours of hope and love. What to think about this journey? Just, that everyone is following his own move and that every dream is exceptional.

In each country, there are villages. Everywhere I took my backpack off, I saw the welcome of children. They told me to explain to the pupils of my country that they wish nothing except a sign, a message or a letter. Just being friendly together, we never think about war.
